Washington is based on a city plan drawn up by French engineer & architect Pierre Charles L'Enfant in 1791, eight years after the United Kingdom recognised the independence of the United States. The plans were typically French, describing sweeping boulevards; large and extravagant gardens; lines of sight allowing magnificent views of the main Government buildings and monuments. This is partly what makes Washington feel so different from other US cities.
Washington is a one industry town, but many firms have created offices there to support business with the Federal Government and to lobby the lawmakers and regulators. So, no surprise that MCI - the Law Firm with an aerial - had its headquarters on Pennsylvania Ave, the same street as the White House.
I was actually based in Vienna, Virginia. This was only about 20 mins from Washington - traffic allowing, but it essentially meant I had a much easier commute, cheaper housing and was still close enough to drive in at weekends to take advantage of the sights and restaurants.
